Rapper’s corpse propped up in nightclub for funeral; the family defends its decision: report

WASHINGTON (WXIN/NEXSTAR) – Videos apparently showing the corpse of a Maryland rapper on display in a Washington DC nightclub have outraged people on social media, but his family members are defending the unorthodox celebration of life.

Markelle Morrow, 24, who registered as Goonew, was fatally shot on March 18, according to Prince George’s County police.

Social media videos recorded at his funeral on Sunday, titled The Final Show, captured the musical artist’s body, dressed in jeans, an Amiri sweatshirt, jewelry, glasses and a crown, placed on the stage of Bliss Nightclub, according to TMZ.

Reaction from audience members appears to be mixed, with some dancing while others stare at the scene, seemingly struggling to process what they see.

“Our generation is so weird, and people aren’t even fazed by a corpse in the club like this,” one person tweeted. “Rip Goonew but I would never make funeral arrangements like this.”

“I don’t know who rapper Goonew was,” tweeted another. “The fact that you have his corpse propped up in a club is very disrespectful and bizarre…”

The rapper’s own relatives, however, defended the farewell, saying that was exactly how they wanted to honor it.

“Despite all the negatives, people probably don’t know anything about us,” Morrow’s mother, Patrice Morrow, said. WTTG. “They have no idea. People just say what they want to say and that’s fine. That’s perfectly fine. I’m happy with the way I got my son back. I want people to tell me. just leave to cry in peace.

Morrow’s sister, Ariana Morrow, said the family was just trying to block out the backlash over the event.

“They’re like, I know her mom wouldn’t approve of that,” Ariana Morrow said. “Yeah, she did, she was on stage with us.”

Bliss Nightclub apologized for the now-viral funeral in an Instagram post, saying:

“Our deepest condolences to Goonew’s family, friends and fans. Bliss was contacted by a local funeral home to rent our hall for Goonew’s homecoming celebration. Bliss was never made aware of what happens. We sincerely apologize to anyone who may be upset or offended. Please keep Goonew’s family and friends in your prayers during this difficult time.”

As of Tuesday, Morrow’s death was still an open homicide case. According WBFF.
