Isle of Wight nightclub events for adults with special educational needs

Fever & Shopbased in Newport, has been hosting these events since May, and the turnout has been fantastic.

In addition to a dance floor, the club also has a sensory room, for those who want a quieter experience.

Director Luke Bontoft said: “We were approached about six months ago by Ryde House Group asking if we wanted to host an event.

“We thought: No hassle, really. It’s a beautiful thing to see, and since the first night it’s been getting better and better.

“We simply provide a safe clubbing space for any adult with learning difficulties.

“The first event was actually on the 4th of May, so it was a Star Wars party – Star Wars themed. It was absolutely awesome.

“It’s always busy on those nights. Any adult with learning difficulties, who might not normally feel comfortable on a regular Saturday night outing, can come here.

“It’s two hours at the moment, but we’re looking to extend that.

“I expected it to go well, but we were blown away on the first night – the queue was huge.

“We couldn’t park in the parking lot, it was so crowded.

“It’s a five pound entry, and they get a free drink on arrival.

“The theme changes every month. We’ve done a back-to-school disco, a beach party theme, Halloween, and we’re going to do a Christmas theme in December.

“Some of their dance moves are brilliant, and they always ask for songs. One of the older guys loves his Bob Marley – reggae.”

Assistant manager Rachel Mackett said: “We really put it together, just to give people of all ages – mixed abilities – a chance for a nightclub experience.

“We have a lot of regulars now, and a lot of parents who come too.

“We’re always impressed with costumes, and we have so many different ages coming.

“It’s a great time, and we don’t have any problems – everyone is happy.

“It’s honestly my favorite night, working here. I love it.”

Among the attendees is Cameron May, 22, from Shanklin.

He said he came to have a little fun and laughs, and is a bit of a regular at Fever — not just on Wednesdays, but also on weekends.

“I’ve only been coming on Fridays and Saturdays recently,” said Cameron, who hasn’t missed an event since its inception.

“That’s good. I’m looking forward to the music.”

Another eager to party was Dylan Atkins, from Ryde.

The 19-year-old has already made plans to celebrate his 21st birthday in Vegas and says he knows he’s “getting old”.

“I already feel it,” Dylan said.

When asked what he was going to do in Vegas, Dylan replied, “Probably travel. Maybe have my own statue.

“You never know, I might even bring a woman home. Anything can happen in Vegas.

“I go to Fever every month.

“I always get cravings, every time I drink. I love my salty stuff.

“It’s always been busy.”

When asked if he was happy to have such an event, Dylan replied, “Oh yes.”

“I like my pubs, I like my nightclubs.”
